Barclays can trace its roots in Wolverhampton back to at least 1797 with the private bank of Hordern, Molineux and Co. Little is known about the origins of this bank but it was converted into three separate joint stock banks in the early 1830s: Dudley and West Bromwich Banking Co; Shropshire Banking Co; and Wolverhampton and Staffordshire Banking Co, the latter based in Wolverhampton.

Material available at Group Archives: deeds of settlement; bank notes.
