The Bank of Africa was incorporated in England in 1879 to carry on the business of banking in South Africa. The nominal capital was £1,000,000 in 40,000 shares of £25 each. It took over the business of the Oriental Bank Corporation (founded 1873) in South Africa. In 1912 it was acquired by the National Bank of South Africa Ltd (see entry for that bank).
