In 1961, at the age of 19, Rosemary Mwangi Njoki became the first African woman to be employed by the bank as a clerk since its formation in East Africa. She took up the post at the Government Road, Nairobi branch following completion of the senior school certificate at the African Girls High School at Kikuyu. Rosemary said "I always wanted to be a Nurse, but I knew I would be the first African girl to work at the Bank and the opportunity seemed too good to miss."
