Two pages from an essay by assistant general manager and local director Lt. Col. Ean Stewart-Smith, describing the status of the mid-20th century bank clerk, his hobbies and outlook, and the trouble taken by the banks to provide amenities for him. His description of the bank employee is evocative and, at times, touching and amusing: 'the bank clerk belongs not to the proletariat but to the bourgeoisie....even though in his leisure hours he can be probably be found using up his old battle-dress trousers while digging in the garden.'
'The Staff of the Banks,' c1954
